Lahaina Harbor improvements focus on pedestrians

LAHAINA, Hawaii >> Organizers of a plan to revitalize the area around Lahaina Harbor say their improvements will focus on pedestrians.
The Maui News reports the improvements included redesigned sidewalks, lighting and benches and native plants fronting the harbor.
Maui County gave $750,000 earlier this year to the Lahaina Restoration Foundation for the projects.
Executive Director Theo Morrison of the Lahaina Restoration Foundation says pedestrians are the priority because they use the area the most even though it’s not designed that way. He says the plans won’t shut down any streets.
Morrison says the group is currently working on planning, design and permitting. Construction is set to begin in July 2015.
Morrison says a second phase of the plan would cost an additional $1.5 million and include wider sidewalks and a promenade.
