Pedestrian injured by car in Aiea driveway dies

A 79-year-old Aiea woman died Thursday after suffering critical injuries when a motorist hit the woman’s front gate, which then struck her.

Police said the driver, a 74-year-old Aiea woman, arrived at about 12:15 p.m. at a home near Kahapili and Kaonohi streets to pick up the older woman.

When the older woman opened the iron gate, the driver accidentally accelerated and struck the gate with her 2004 Toyota Camry, police said. The older woman was then thrown to the pavement by the force of the gate striking her.

The driver then swerved to the right, and the car continued over a retaining wall, crashing into a neighboring house and winding up partially in a bedroom, police said.

The older woman was taken in critical condition with head and internal injuries to the Queen’s Medical Center, where she later died, police said. The driver was not injured.
