The Medical Examiner's office identified the 48-year-old man who died while participating in the 45th annual Waikiki Roughwater Swim event on Labor Day as Daniel Mindich.
The Medical Examiner’s office identified the 48-year-old man who died while participating in the 45th annual Waikiki Roughwater Swim event on Labor Day as Daniel Mindich.
Punahou School said Mindich was a high school English instructor and director of the high school summer school.
Authorities said Mindich was half-way through the race Monday when he ran into trouble.
The annual ocean swim race is held at Waikiki Beach, starting at the New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel and ending at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.
An autopsy will be conducted Tuesday to determine cause of death.
He was seen at about 9:55 a.m. by water safety personnel. Lifeguards brought the swimmer to Kaimana Beach and administered CPR but he was unresponsive.
Paramedics took him to the hospital in critical condition.
Mindich’s Linkedin profile said he received his bachelor’s degree from Vassar College in 1987; master’s degree and teaching credentials from Stanford University in 1991; and doctorate from Stanford in education in 2012.
