Coast Guard helicopter rescues diver in distress

A Coast Guard helicopter rescued a distressed diver about one mile off Kaena Point Friday night.

A mariner called the Coast Guard at about 10:08 p.m. when his boat became disabled while one of his passengers was diving about 500 yards away and he was unable to retrieve the diver.

The mariner was able to maintain sight of the diver because he was wearing a light, the Coast Guard said.

An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter launched from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point at 11:24 p.m. and reached the diver 22 minutes later.

A rescue crew brought him on board the helicopter and took him to an ambulance waiting at Yokohama Bay.

The diver was reported in good condition, the Coast Guard said.

The Honolulu Fire Department towed the disabled vessel to Waianae Boat Harbor.
