Visitors explore the Tunnel Log, a passage cut through a giant sequoia tree that fell in 1937, at Sequoia National Park, near Visalia, Calif. Researchers are studying how California’s drought is affect- ing the giant sequoias, some more than 3,000 years old and 300 feet tall, making them among the oldest and largest living things on Earth.
ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. >> An exhibit of objects created by Louis C. Tiffany has opened at the Museum of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City.
The exhibit, which opened Tuesday, features 63 pieces of works by Tiffany. The pieces include stained-glass windows, lamps, vases and pottery.
Among the items in the exhibition are lamp sprays from the Whalehead Inn in Corolla.
The exhibit runs through the fall of 2016.
Website highlights ‘Hip Africa’
A new website aims to showcase “Hip Africa” by encouraging travelers to explore new destinations on the continent and consider vacations that don’t revolve around safaris.
The site, hipafrica.com, launched with information on five cities: Lagos, Nigeria; Nairobi, Kenya; Dakar, Senegal; Accra, Ghana; and Johannesburg.
The site bills itself as a portal for high-end travel, “offering up the continent as a viable place for city breaks, great restaurants, arts and culture, and … boutique and luxury hotels” along with cultural hot spots from art galleries and shopping to museums and escapes.
The site offers frank, practical advice about everything from street crime to drinking water and malaria, along with information on visa requirements and local transport.
Eventually the site aims to cover more than 30 destinations in 20 countries.
Dome car offers autumn views
ALBANY, N.Y. >> Amtrak is again running its “Great Dome” car between Albany and Montreal during leaf-peeping season.
The car features an upper level with windows on all sides to provide panoramic views of Lake Champlain and the eastern edge of the Adirondack Mountains. Amtrak says the car will run for a six-week period that began Thursday.
Amtrak is running the program in partnership with the state Department of Transportation and the National Park Service Trails and Rails program.
The dome car will run north from Albany on Thursdays, Saturdays and Mondays. It will run south from Montreal on Fridays, Sundays and Tuesdays.
