2 dead in Massachusetts home; carbon monoxide poisoning eyed

MILFORD, Mass. » Authorities say two people have been found dead of possible carbon monoxide poisoning inside a Massachusetts home.

Paul Jarvey of the Worcester County district attorney’s office says authorities were called to the duplex in Milford at around 1:50 p.m. Friday. He says they found the bodies of a male and female inside a bedroom.

Jarvey says two other people from the residence were taken to a hospital and treated for what is believed to be carbon monoxide poisoning.

He says the deaths are under investigation.

The chief medical examiner’s office will perform autopsies on the victims. Their names are being withheld until family members can be notified.

Milford is about 30 miles southwest of Boston.

Anytime the windows are all kept closed, the chance of a odorless gas accumulating in side of the room is increased. There are gas detectors that can sense the presence of the gas even when we cannot.

Poorly insulated and inadequate or faulty heating system may have contributed to,the tragedy. Remember during the occupation ofbJapan there were similar incident where family members succumbed to carbon monoxide poisonings. Those days coal or charcoals were used to heat their “ko ta tsu” a small boxlike device used for heating the lower portions of the body in small rooms for all members of the family. A large comforter was placed over the box-like contraption and at most 4 shared it by sitting very close and covering up,the lower extremities.
