Tokyo Tea Party celebrates street style with ‘ambassador of cuteness’
The Modern Honolulu is partnering with the Honolulu Museum of Art to present a free Tokyo Tea Party featuring Misako Aoki, 6 p.m. Jan. 28 at The Study.
The event is part of a free lecture series, and guests will learn about Tokyo street art from the Honolulu Museum of Art’s textiles curator, Sara Oka, and meet Aoki, a “Lolita” model and president of the Japan Lolita Association.
Aoki, pictured right, was one of three young women appointed Kawaii Taishi (Ambassadors of Cuteness) in 2009 by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The “Harajuku: Toyko Street Fashion” exhibition currently on display at the museum examines the far-reaching influence of the movement that emerged in the 1990s on the streets near the Harajuku train station.
