Honolulu firefighters rescued a 30-year-old man from a Wahiawa home that collapsed on him and four other workers Tuesday afternoon. The five workers were renovating the one-story structure on Walker Avenue.

Twenty one firefighters from six companies were dispatched to the four-bedroom home at 1:28 p.m. and arrived at 1:31 p.m., said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. David Jenkins. Four workers were able to escape uninjured but the one male worker was trapped inside the building. Firefighters were able to get into the structure and pulled the man out at 2:08 p.m.

The man suffered knee injuries and was transported to a trauma center in serious condition, said Emergency Medical Services spokeswoman Shayne Enright.

Fortunate that he is alive. It would appear that the home was under some sort of renovation.

Possible bad ground termite activity and removing a load bearing wall which could have caused the structure to collaspe.

  7. CKMSurf says:

Betcha he was chopping down internal walls and didn’t check attic for load bearing members. Either that or supports chewed by friendly termites. But pure speculation on my part. Sad to see anyone hurt.

The house was old, built in 1938 (per TV News)…..workers left their tools behind and taken by HPD for safe keeping.

The land is worth more than the house.

Recycle the wood and start over?
