A strong earthquake struck off the coast of Vanuatu today but does not pose a tsunami threat to Hawaii or the immediate region.
The preliminary magnitude 6.5 quake hit at 11:50 a.m., 54.7 miles northwest of Port-Olry, Vanuatu at a depth of 6.2 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Officials at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no tsunami threat to Hawaii, and that a Pacific-wide tsunami was not expected.
