Man charged in stabbing death of Kalihi teen

City prosecutors have charged a 27-year-old probationer for allegedly stabbing to death a 16-year-old Farrington High School football player and injuring his older brother during a dispute in the parking lot of a Kalihi public housing project.
Adrian J. Bringas was charged Thursday night with second-degree murder of Wesley Ulugalu-Sula, 16, and second-degree assault of his 18-year-old brother, Chippa. His bail was set at $500,000.
Bringas also was arrested Tuesday for violating terms of his probation. And later, while in custody, Bringas also was arrested for violating terms of a protective order.
The Ulugalu-Sula brothers were stabbed at about 9:45 p.m. at The Towers at Kuhio Park low-rise near the mailboxes on Ahonui Street after the suspect approached the brothers to inquire about drugs and an argument ensued, a family member said.
Wesley Ulugalu-Sula was taken to a hospital, where he died.
His 18-year-old brother also was taken to the hospital in serious condition. Chippa Ulugalu-Sula was treated for a stab wound to the right hip and was released.
The cause of Wesley Ulugalu-Sula’s death is pending completion of an autopsy by the medical examiner.
Bringas also sustained injuries in the fight and was treated at the Queen’s Medical Center, where he was arrested early Wednesday morning. He was later transferred to the cellblock at the main police station on Beretania Street.
Wesley Ulugalu-Sula was a junior at Farrington and a defensive player on the Governors’ varsity football team.
The suspect has 24 convictions, including three felony convictions, starting from 2008, according to the Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center. The felony convictions were for breaking into a car, abuse and second-degree robbery. He also has been convicted eight times for violating terms of his probation.
Bringas’ last conviction was in February for fourth-degree theft, a petty misdemeanor, and was sentenced to three days in jail.

24 convictions? this guy is hopeless. the only solution is the death penalty.

He’ll be back on the streets soon. Think he must have insider access in the judicial system as to still be on the streets prior. What other scenario could we come up with other than that with all those convictions?
After being found guilty of this murder I would agree with the death penalty.
He will be sent to Florence AZ to serve out his sentence because of costs.
God bless this family of these two youth. If these two youth are involved with drugs then an investigation is required. Why were these two young men out at 9:45 p.m.? Isn’t there school the next morning? Something is wrong with this story. Briangas should be sended back to his homeland but an investigation is needed.

If these judges feel free to put the public in harms way then the PUBLIC ought to be the ones with the voice (via elections) to choose their judges. NOT appointments with no answering TO the public.
“probation violator” ..and, in the infinite-wisdom of the “Probation Board” and his Probation Officer–WHY, EXACTLY, was “Bringas” allowed to roam the streets of Honolulu? Was there ever a Psychiatric Evaluation? What has happened to the City and County “Department of the Prosecuting Attorney”?
The excuse is commonly “The prisons are full.” Why bother with the court trials if they are going to be released anyways? Insanity continues……

Unfreaknbelievable is it not? Insanity continues with good pay for poor judgements from our judicial system. Absolutely no accountability.
If they are not going to keep criminals in prison give them 20 lashes so they at least understand punishment and learn the difference between right and wrong. I got the belt from dad and it did wonders let me tell ya and I totally understood the difference between abuse and punishment for doing wrong.

Three days in jail ! it must be a typo, should have been three years.
No probably 3 days. Now if he did something really horrible like jaywalk or cross the street while on his cell phone then he would have gotten 3 years.
Mean looking dude! If it takes threatening looks to sentence a person in jail this guy would be in there indefinitely!
Our “Catch and Release” system. Get plenty other criminals with dozens of convictions in the community. Don’t want to hear of any more killings before they are put behind bars for good.
