Snap up shave ice ‘cake’

Kulu Kulu’s newest “cake” is sure to win over calorie counters.

Spinning off of the Japanese bakery’s signature light strawberry shortcake, chief technical pastry chef Taka Horiki uses shave ice, whipped cream and fresh strawberry syrup to create his cakeless confection. The only calories come from the whipped cream and fresh strawberries, with just a dash of added sugar.

The strawberry shortcake shave ice will be introduced Sunday at the Honolulu Ekiden and Music festival at Kapiolani Park before its official launch Monday at Kulu Kulu’s Eaton Square location only, at 438 Hobron Lane.

Because of the time needed to create the $10 confection, quantities will be limited. Call 931-0506.

Burgers with global flair

If burgers are your passion, it’s not too late to mark May’s designation as National Hamburger Month.

Hard Rock Cafe is celebrating with international flair. Each Hard Rock location has a signature burger, and select versions are now on tour.

Hawaii’s sandwich, the Da Kine Burger, was renamed the Aloha Burger for purposes of international understanding (literally) and sent away for the month.

Four burgers have come here. Of course, this doesn’t mean a bunch of sandwiches jumped on airplanes, but rather that recipes were sent around and the specialties of various states and nation states have been re-created in cities other than their own.

Burgers visiting the Hard Rock Waikiki location on Beach Walk originated in Seattle, London, Jamaica and Mumbai, India.

They are available through the month at $18.95, which includes fries specially seasoned to match each sandwich. Call 955-7383.
