Melania Trump, wife of Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump, waves to the delegates after her speech during the opening day of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland tonight.

CLEVELAND » Melania Trump’s well-received speech today to the Republican National Convention contained two passages that match nearly word-for-word the speech that first lady Michelle Obama delivered in 2008 at the Democratic National Convention.

The passages in question focus on lessons that Mrs. Trump, the wife of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, said she learned from her parents and the relevance of their lessons in her experience as a mother. They came near the beginning of her roughly 10-minute speech, which was otherwise distinct from the address that Mrs. Obama gave when her husband, then-Sen. Barack Obama, was being nominated for president.

In Mrs. Trump’s speech in Cleveland, she said: “From a young age, my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life, that your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise, that you treat people with respect. They taught and showed me values and morals in their daily life.”

In Mrs. Obama’s 2008 speech in Denver, she said: “And Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: like, you work hard for what you want in life, that your word is your bond, that you do what you say you’re going to do, that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don’t know them and even if you don’t agree with them.”

Another passage with notable similarities that follows two sentences later in Mrs. Trump’s speech addresses her attempts to instill those values in her son.

“We need to pass those lessons on to the many generations to follow,” Mrs. Trump said. “Because we want our children in this nation to know that the only limit to your achievements is the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.”

In the first lady’s 2008 speech, she said, “Barack and I set out to build lives guided by these values and to pass them onto the next generation, because we want our children — and all children in this nation — to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work hard for them.”

Trump’s campaign had no immediate reaction when asked about the similarities in the two speeches. White House officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment late this evening.

In an interview with NBC News taped ahead of her convention appearance and posted online early Tuesday, Mrs. Trump said of her speech, “I wrote it.” She added that she had “a little help.”

yep no big deal, just a little bit of plagiarism.

      • wn says:

Yeah…this ranks pretty low on my list of infractions with all that’s been going on…:)

HawaiiCheeseBall, Plagiarize? A really long stretch, don’t you think. Yep, no big deal.

        • HawaiiCheeseBall says:

When you copy someone else’s words and don’t attribute it to them its plagiarism and yes its dishonest. Pure and simple. No stretch here at all. The media has called her out. It will dominate the news cycles for the next day or two. the Dems are laughing.

        • Ikefromeli says:

Absolutely not, and that’s from a statistical vantage. To have the exact 23 word string, which is what happened, the odds are one in a trillion. This was reported by the Washington Post this morning. Please focus on submitting actual facts and not just ill-researched opinions.

        • BlueEyedWhiteDevil says:

What I remember most from Mrs. Obama’s speech was her “for the first time in my life, I’m proud to be an American.”

What I got from Mrs. Trump was her inherent pride of being an American citizen.

“In 2006 I was very proud to become a citizen of the United States, the greatest privilege on planet earth.”
          A big difference to me.

      • Mr Mililani says:

Take one look at her from the front or the rear and I think a lot of us don’t care what she said.

    • MillionMonkeys says:

The plagiarism itself isn’t an infraction so big that criminal charges–or expulsion from school–needs to be considered. But it highlights the shoddy, ignorant approach of Team Trump.

It’s not criminal or scandalous, it’s comical.

    • Kealaula says:

We could move on to the RNC’s biography of Melania, including her ‘degree’. One year of college in Slovenia somehow earned her a degree at Trump University.

The crowd really loved Michelle Obama’s speech. When Michelle gave it, you could hear her heart.

That the Trump apparatus is proclaiming this plagiarism is not what it clearly is kind of says it all. And to plagiarize about the value of hard work. Frauds.

    • amela says:

That’s what Trump’s people should do. Admit their wrong doings and move on. That’s the problem with him he’ll take all the credit when things go good even if he has nothing to do with it and when things turn bad ignore and deny it. The Republican party can’t admit when they’re wrong no accountability. And you want this man to run this country?

    • Meleana22 says:

Agreed! With all the tragedy and serious problems throughout the world today and there are still petty people criticizing and going on and on about Melania Trump’s speech last night… ? Unbelievable.

  2. sarge22 says:

No problem. They had similar childhoods.

    • lespark says:

You are correct. One’s origin came originally from a small town in Slovenia. The other from a small town on the Ubangi.

      • HawaiiCheeseBall says:

Laughable. I mean I am pretty sure she did not write the speech (its okay I would not have expected her to as most candidates and their inner circle have speech writers). More that likely somebody drafted it she looked it over, and did her thing. No big thing, that’s how its supposed to work. EXCEPT – who the heck sends the candidates wife out on stage with a plagerized speech. That is incompetence and embarrassment to the campaign. All the news coverage on the first day of the RNC convention is about a voice vote and plagiarism. Its a self inflicted wound and if you think its “no problem” you had better think again. Day one of the convention was a bust because of this. The Democrats must be laughing. Think about the optics here, Trump’s wife had to plagiarize her speech from the very First Lady whose husband her husband call all kinds of names. Yeah no problem. Sure. Keep saying that to yourself.

        • justmyview371 says:

          Oh go away.

        • JustBobF says:

I’m pretty sure Trump would call her, “Lyin’, cheatin’, stealin’, Melania!”

        • mitt_grund says:

She said in an earlier interview, that she wrote the speech with a “little” help. That little help was that piece of plagiarized material. Of all the luck, stolen almost verbatim from Michelle Obama’s speech. I really liked that segment as it showed her background and her values — but then it turned out that the words were Michelle’s, making Melania look basically like a Stepford wife.

Trump’s convention manager should have owned up to it, and publicly fired the ghostwriter.

        • lespark says:

I’ve heard those words and phrases way before. Just one of many cliches. What’s the big deal.

      • seaborn says:

Sarge and Les would be sharing kisses and happy dancing if it had been Michelle Obama plagiarizing Melania Trump. Hypocrites.

        • lespark says:

Just one of many cliches. You have to ask where Mrs. Obama got her material from.

        • MillionMonkeys says:

Michelle Obama is intelligent enough to put together (with the help of some competent and trustworthy speechwriters) words and phrases picked up through a lifetime of good education and good living.

Melania Trump was a hot model dumb enough to marry Donald.

      • choyd says:

        That’s your problem with Les?

Nevermind that he’s fully in favor of burning the Constitution and Bill of rights to ash.

The number of anti-Constitution, anti-freedom, anti-civil liberties folk here grows.

    • inverse says:

Exactly right. This total failure just validates Trump and his leadership are clueless amateurs who want to run the country.

      • Billyther says:

Sounds like cut and paste error of common cliches. So few remember our now VP Biden had to drop out of Presidential Race in 1988 for plagiarizing an entire speech from a labour party candidate in England. He changed two words – name and city. No Google know it alls in those days. You might want to worry about more important things – Turkey going to ISIS and we will have to support them because they are part of NATO. Good luck with the refugee stream from that everyone.

  7. WizardOfMoa says:

    Is this news worthy?

    • keaukaha says:

Of course she was set up and nobody in Chumps inner circle was smart enough to catch it.

    • choyd says:

It’s not really, when you compare what else they did.

The Trump Campaign is lazy as it is clueless.

In a proper campaign, someone would have done a text search to ensure that they weren’t copying another speech.
In a proper campaign, someone would have image searched that meme to ensure it wasn’t from an openly neo-nazi website.
In a proper campaign, someone would have image searched what a sheriff’s star looked like before claiming it was the same thing.
In a proper campaign, someone would have fact checked memes citing statistics before posting them.

Time and time again, the Toilet Paper Candidate simply fails to do what even a barely responsible teenager would do on a paper. What does that suggest in terms of policy?

Hillary has her own carelessness problems, but Trump’s campaign is so incredibly lazy that one has to wonder how little they will actually look into anything before making policy.

  8. Ronin006 says:

Those critical of a few lines in Mrs. Trump’s speech being similar to lines in Michelle Obama’s speeches apparently do not remember a speech made by Barak Obama in 2008 which contained a few lines from a speech given by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick. It was no big deal then and it is no big deal now.

    • keaukaha says:

Come on don’t play this down. This is a major screw up. She said she wrote this script with very little help. Liars of a feather flock together. This day has been most entertaining for me Mahalo to you Chump supporters.

      • justmyview371 says:

        Like you.

      • Ronin006 says:

Who wrote Hillary’s Benghazi speech in which she blamed the attack on a movie trailer? Obama used the same words as did Susan Rice and other Obama hacks. Yes, liars of a feather certainly flock together.

        • choyd says:

Are you 12? Because you seem overly desperate to avoid actually discussing the topic.

Dishonest people always seek to change the topic away from something they cannot address.

Hillary’s problems do not excuse the blatant plagiarism that occurred. I really hope you don’t have kids. Because you’re a giant walking poster for “Two Wrongs Make a Right.” What kind of horrible morals are you pushing out?

If you were a barely functioning adult, you’d admit that this was plagiarism, REGARDLESS of what Clinton has allegedly done.

But then again, you argued that mankind and dinosaurs walked together 6,000 years ago. So what do you know?

        • Ronin006 says:

Choyd, the English language is full of common idioms, catchphrases, expressions and sayings that are frequently used in speeches. The fact that someone uses some in a speech that were once used by someone else does not make it plagiarism. Plagiarism occurs when a writer uses language that is identical to or closely imitating the copyrighted work of an author without authorization or by not crediting the original author. What literary work has Michelle Obama copywrigted? “Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead.” First uttered by Admiral David Farragut during the Civil War and since used in speeches by hundreds of politicians. Plagiarism? Of course not. And to the Trump campaign I say “Damn the critics! Full speed ahead.”

        • choyd says:

Ronin, Turnitin, the anti-plagiarism software used in colleges to bust kids for copying computed that the chances of generating that same 6 lines by coincidence is less than 1 in one trillion chances.

      • Ronin006 says:

Regarding Obama’s use of language from a speech given by then Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, he did it twice. The White House is now saying Obama did not plagiarize Deval Patrick’s speech in 2008 and instead was “inspired” by it.

        • choyd says:

Patrick and Obama appeared to have cited many of the same historical well known quotes.

Are you saying that’s the same as copying virtually verbatim from an original speech?

No one thinks anyone is committing plagiarism when they cite Kennedy’s well known quotes. If you can show that Deval and Barry’s speeches are very similar side by side on Deval’s original content, you might have something. But from what I can research, it was mostly both of them citing well known historical quotes. Which would also appear to make your argument claim that ANY speech that cites such a quote is plagiarizing a speech that cited such a quote before it. That’s pretty dumb, but then again, you’re a 6,000 years ago man walked with dinosaur kind of guy so whatever.

Again, you posted that after I called you out. Which is kind of embarrassing for you.

        • Ronin006 says:

Choyd, side by side. This is what Patrick said in a speech in 2006:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” Just words—just words! “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.” Just words! “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” Just words! “I have a dream.” Just words!
This is what Obama said in a speech in 2008:
Don’t tell me words don’t matter. “I have a dream.” Just words? “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” Just words? “We have nothing to fear but fear itself”—just words? Just speeches?
They were, as you say, well known political quotes, and although arranged differently, Obama mirrored Patrick almost word for word. The use of “just words” by Obama indicates quite clearly that the entire paragraph in Obama’s speech was lifted from Patrick’s speech. It is unfortunate Obama did not do something like this while at Harvard University. Had he done so, he would have been condemned for plagiarism, which Harvard defines as passing off of a source’s information, ideas, or words as your own by omitting to cite them—an act of lying, cheating, and stealing, and we probably would not have to put up with him for the past seven and one half years.

  9. Kriya says:

Fix your title: “plagiarism” of a passage about “honesty of hard work” should be in there somewhere.

  10. LKK56 says:

This is absolute plagiarism, Mliana actually rode this speech ten years ago and Michelle copied her.

    • choyd says:

More proof that Trump has excellent foresight.

He got his wife to write a speech a decade ago, hide it from the world in the event he wins a nomination for something he never intended to do, because he knew that the wife of a sitting president would write the same speech.

      Pre-Cogs for Trump!

The sad thing is, there are actually people d_ _b enough to believe that here.

  11. bsdetection says:

She plagiarized the part of her speech about Trump family values. Think about the unsurprising irony of that. The cherry on top of this sundae of insincere schlock would be discovering that family member Jared Kushner, a frequent Trump speech writer, is responsible.

  12. Tita Girl says:

“… that your word is your bond, …” You mean like –If you like your plan, you can keep your plan.

What was the reason for his infidelity? Smart people know this fact.check it out for yourself….you’ll be surprised.

And if you really check? There was an attorney (in President Clinton’s Admin.) who committed suicide because of constant bashing by your “Sweet Hillary”.He couldn’t take it and killed himself. 17. mitt_grund says:

Plagiarism is plagiarism no matter how little. Obvious is that a ghost writer helped to flesh out Melania’s speech. That was the source of the plagiarism and the first mistake. Second mistake — was not to have someone with the background to vet all the add-ins. Third mistake — was that Trump’s convention manager tried a snow job — rather than admit a faux pas — he accused Hillary Clinton of making a mountain out of a few similar phrases. Sabi, sabi, sabi. The innocent victim is Melania, who was trying to support her husband, Drumpf Trump.

So, now she is made to look stupid. Trump is mad, she is mad. And no word as to who ghost wrote the speech. Maybe a bullet-riddled body will be found in a Cleveland alley, near the convention hall.

    • mitt_grund says:

Got caught again – sent for moderation – inadvertent use of the s***** word, but in a good way.

So, here we go, less the s***** word.

Plagiarism is plagiarism no matter how little. Obvious is that a ghost writer helped to flesh out Melania’s speech. That was the source of the plagiarism and the first mistake. Second mistake — was not to have someone with the background to vet all the add-ins. So, now she is left hanging. It’s no small thing to the Trumps, so they see it for what it is — plagiarism from the worst possible source — Michelle Obama.

Trump is mad, Melania is mad. And no word as to who ghost wrote the speech. Maybe a bullet-riddled body will be found in a Cleveland alley, near the convention hall.

    • lespark says:

Mr. Trump was the first to bring up illegal immigration. Controversial at the time, it has since become an issue.
He fights for law and order, praising our brave police departments.
He is a successful billionaire. He is better prepared to get America out of debt.

      • choyd says:

Actually, illegal immigration has been an issue for at least a decade. Trump also has no actual plan to fix this. Furthermore, you are still ignoring how illegal immigration is negative as more people are going south than coming north. The wall doesn’t make sense, and it would require taking huge sums of land from people. I realize you want to burn the Constitution just as much as Trump does, but some of us actually believe in private property laws for the masses.

Trump has only sound bites. Just like you. Obama has praised police just as much as Trump has. Praise does nothing to solve our problems.

True he is rich. But he would have been much richer had he just invested his loan into a mutual fund. Trump is literally less successful than a trust fund baby sitting by the pool for three decades letting that same million earn money in the market.

  19. bsdetection says:

Michael Gerson, chief speechwriter for George W. Bush, said, “An error like the one Melania Trump committed last night tells us that the Trump campaign lacks seriousness and structure, which is also demonstrated by its divisive style, weak ground game and poor fundraising numbers.”

  20. lespark says:

If the Democrats watched the first day of the RNC Convention and still wants to elect Crooked Hilliary a ton of bricks can fall on them and they won’t change their mind.

  21. Ikefromeli says:

It is at once painfully ironic and illuminating that Ms. Trump would steal the words and thoughts of Ms. Obama. Lest you think this is mere happenstance, the odds of the 26 word string in its exact order are profoundly astronomical. So, Despite some defenders saying Melania Trump lifted words “coincidentally,” the Washingtonian Post used Turnitin.com to find that “the likelihood that a 16-word match,” like the one between Trump’s speech and Obama’s, is “‘just a coincidence’ is less than 1 in a trillion.” The longest match between the two speeches is 23 words: so telling.

Further, it could not contrast the stark distinctions between the two ladies: one is of the upper margin of intelligence and academia, e.g. Princeton and Harvard Law, while the other, has nary a college degree. The National Review, a thoroughly conservative publication, had one of its editors say this morning, “I hope they compensated Michelle for that speech last night.”

This is is just another, in a long line of buffoonish and basically amateurish attempt to run a presidential campaign.

    • inverse says:

Yes but the later has serious boo tay in her fitted white dress. Just look at the picture SA included with this story from ‘behind’. Imagine Hillary in a similar dress. Ewwwwwwwwwwww. If that is your perspective, then Ms. Trump, should not shake credibility by saying, that she hand wrote the entire speech….which is just plain incredulous. The odds of her placing two, 30 word strings, verbatim, are exceedingly long,–less than in a trillion.
