Weaker storm whips up surf

    Kila dug into the shore at Sandy Beach on Saturday as the sun broke through clouds brought by Hurricane Lester. Erik Lacasse, Kila’s owner, said of the weather: “It’s just kind of a normal day.”

    Sandy Beach was busy with bodyboarders looking to take advantage of the large surf generated by Hurricane Lester on Saturday morning. A high-surf warning remains in effect for east-facing shores from Kauai to Maui until 6 a.m. today.

A weakened Hurricane Lester continued passing north of the state Saturday, bringing dangerously high surf for east-facing shores, the possibility of heavy showers over Kauai and Oahu, and muggy weather likely until Labor Day. Read more
