Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton paused while she gaveremarks on the explosion in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood onboard her campaign plane at Westchester County Airport, in White Plains, N.Y. on Saturday.

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. » Hillary Clinton today condemned what she described as “apparent terrorist attacks” in Minnesota, New Jersey and New York.

The Democratic presidential candidate made the statement a day after a bomb rocked the Chelsea district in New York City, a pipe bomb exploded in a New Jersey seaside community and a stabbing attack unfolded at a Minnesota mall. Officials in New York and New Jersey said today they were still investigating who was behind the explosions and what the motivation was, while the Minnesota attack was being investigated as a possible act of terrorism.

Clinton stressed that investigations were still underway, saying: “Law enforcement officials are working to identify who was behind the attacks in New York and New Jersey and we should give them the support they need to finish the job and bring those responsible to justice — we will not rest until that happens.”

On the attack in St. Cloud, Minnesota, the former secretary of state noted that the Islamic State group had claimed responsibility and added, “This should steel our resolve to protect our country and defeat ISIS and other terrorist groups.”

Clinton noted her plans to take on the Islamic State group, which include increased intelligence and efforts to better combat propaganda and recruitment online.

Both presidential candidates have been quick to weigh in on the attacks. On Saturday evening, Republican nominee Donald Trump appeared to pre-empt New York City officials when he declared that a “bomb went off” in New York City before officials had released details. Trump made the comments around 9:10 p.m., shortly after the explosion in Manhattan’s crowded Chelsea neighborhood and as emergency officials were responding to the blast.

“I must tell you that just before I got off the plane a bomb went off in New York and nobody knows what’s going on,” Trump said. “But boy we are living in a time — we better get very tough, folks. We better get very, very tough. It’s a terrible thing that’s going on in our world, in our country and we are going to get tough and smart and vigilant.”

A spokeswoman for Trump did not respond to an email asking whether Trump was briefed about the incident before taking the stage.

Clinton was briefed on the incidents Saturday shortly after her speech at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation dinner in Washington. At the time, she stressed that it was important to support first responders and “to let this investigation unfold.”

making america safe is why the national fraternal order of police endorses the combover.

    • saywhatyouthink says:

Well it’s clear the Democratic strategy isn’t working, the world has only gotten more dangerous for American citizens over the past 8 years.

      • Boots says:

As if it was safer when we had a republican president. Just remember we had 9/11 plus multiple embassy attacks. And what does the Donald offer? 1984 mentality. Orwell would be proud.

        • lespark says:

After 8 years has it got better or worse?

        • MillionMonkeys says:

What the h— is Donald going to do about it? Nothing. He has no actual plan about anything. He just talks tough like he’s in a John Wayne or mafia movie, and people who have undeveloped thinking skills eat up his slogans.

Ask yourself, what is his actual plan? Make the generals (who know less than him) come up with a plan in 90 days? What a plan!

        • Pocho says:

“Apparent” terrorism. hahahahaha! Hillary’s a Chameleon following Trumps lead on terrorism.

        • lespark says:

Apeman, how do you know so much? Too much CNN. His plan is to get elected. Notice how Crooked Hilliary takes Bernie’s and Donald’s ideas and strays away from Obama? The lady has wax between her ears. She looks like she’s on overload.

        • Pocho says:

Great pic looking Presidential. hahahahahahaha, Hillary’s a chameleon

        • MillionMonkeys says:

I’m not a Hillary lover, so you can insult her all you want—if that makes you feel better.

And when you feel better, think about your man crush. Reality TV people, like the Kardashians, the Jersey Shore gang, and Donald, belong on TV, not in the White House. Why? Because they only say cute things, never think about them, and have no plan to do anything about it.

Do you understand? Then please reply—without mentioning his opponent.

      • South76 says:

Many of the terrorist attacks in Europe are now tied to lone wolf or several small packs of wolves mixed into the refugees fleeing the Middle East. The US is accepting thousands of these so called refugees, how many of them have a mindset of coming here to kill Americans, it is just a matter of time when the JV team as Obama has called them succeed in bringing their murderous mindset to this country.

      • Pocho says:

Hillary slams Trump for Grandstanding terror attack! With that said, she’s basically telling all of us to down play the terror. Well, it’s a step above lying to the US citizens who’s kin were killed in Benghazi! She lied to em kin and learned a lesson to keep these terror attacks under wraps. lol

      • klastri says:

You’re wrong, of course. Crime is down. Way down.

    • allie says:

Clinton did the right thing: wait until we have real information that connects any of these incidents to ISIS. ISIS loves to claim any act of violence as “one of their soldiers.” They love disinformation . As always, Trump is dangerously impetuous. He is such a wimp. Not tough in any way other than as an actor.

      • lespark says:

How do you know? You know nothing.

      • calentura says:

You must have read other articles about this. In this one, it is Clinton who brings up ISIS, not Trump. Clinton who was “tough” on Qaddafi, and now look at Libya. How can you support such a person..?

        • MillionMonkeys says:

Bend over and spank yourself! Clinton correctly describes the attacks as “apparent terrorist attcks.”

LATER in the article, ISIS claims credit for the Minnesota stabbings. Clinton now appropriately mentions that the U.S. needs to fight ISIS, and notes her plan to improve information gathering and to fight ISIS’recruitment tricks.

          Spank yourself!

      • Allaha says:

Clinton please always use the word “ISLAMIC” terrorist attacks, not just ISIS – has nothing to do with Syria.

      • peanutgallery says:

        You’re a Kool-Aid drinker Allie. Find a 12-step.

      • bumbai says:

Is “Allie” really a 25 year old Syrian named Akbar? They love disinformation.

      • kuroiwaj says:

Morning Allie, any bomb set off in the United States is an act of Terror. These terrorist can be homegrown, legal immigrant, or illegal immigrant who do build, plant, and explode the bomb. Ms Clinton wants to play on both sides of the fence and is failing on both side of the fence. Let’s vote for Mr. Trump and work to make America Safe and Great Again.

    • BlueEyedWhiteDevil says:

      …and the border patrol outfit.

  2. WizardOfMoa says:

Hope this incident is thoroughly investigated and not just use by the presidential candidates as a stepping stone to enhance their political path to the presidency.

    • MillionMonkeys says:

Yes, both of them with quick opinions on the story, it’s what fretful voters want to see. But Trump jumps the gun, acting like he knows everything before officials released details. It’s what Trump fans want to hear. It’s unrealistic.

Hillary at least has a plan that involves improved information gathering. It’s realistic. But Trump fans don’t want to hear that. They just want to hear “Yippie ki yay!” as Bruce Willis (as portrayed by Donald Trump) blasts away all the bad guys.

      • sarge22 says:

HiLIARy said it was the video.

      • DPK says:

So, Monkey, why haven’t we been “gathering information” for the past few years? Is it because Oblunder considers ISSIS a JV team?

      • lespark says:

They’ve been “gathering” information long enough. Time for action.

      • MillionMonkeys says:

What extra information will Trump gather with “extreme vetting”? Again, another cute phrase that means nothing.

What specific action do YOU want? Not sure? But in these frightening times, a macho-talking dude makes people feel better….until we realize he has no plan.

I’m no expert at this, but I think a good way to combat ISIS is through tech and social media intelligence. They’re very clever at recruiting more soldiers and brides through social media. Hillary has been super careless with emails, and Donald is living in the 1950’s, so hopefully whoever wins will have smart advisers and agents who can hack into ISIS and mess them up. And of course, crack military teams that can get in there and blow their azzes to Allah!

  3. etalavera says:

So Trump was right after all! Love how those liberals got their undies in a bunch last night!

  4. Ronin006 says:

Clinton, after telling reporters she had been briefed “about the bombings in New York and New Jersey and the attack in Minnesota,” accused Trump of rushing to judgment by saying it was a bomb. Well, Hillary, since your briefing was about “bombings,” isn’t if safe to say it was a bomb? Trump beat her to it again. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/clinton-criticizes-trump-rushing-call-nyc-explosion-bomb-article-1.2796837

  5. wn says:

I noticed that HRC was a bit uncomfortable during a televised interview addressing this bombing incident. Perhaps it was a reminder her about the past FALN terrorist activities and long string of Bill Clinton’s “PardonGate”. HRC supported FALN clemency during her run for Senator and then backed off. In my opinion, there’s a long string of questionable pardons. Hence, the aforementioned just opens up further scrutiny…bad timing…

    • BlueEyedWhiteDevil says:

I could never understand the clemency for the faln, did anyone think she was gonna lose the Puerto Rican vote?

      • wn says:

In my opinion…you need to follow the path of $ and influence. If you just Goggle Clinton / FALN there’s a decent link on Pardongate and a string of rather disturbing investigations that went no where. I was ignorant of the degree of what was going on and now understand why the issue of corruption is front and center and it keeps on going on and on…sad…

  6. soundofreason says:

And WHAT party is voluntarily importing terrorists? And NOW she says let’s get tough? Kinda like throwing cheese around your house and then wanting credit for taking charge against the mice.

    • wn says:

You mean RATS? By the way, I don’t mean to even insult rodents from being insulted by being maligned by using their name in describing a cowardly terrorist. This goes the same for those, who thru omission, allow same to continue to prey upon us. So rodents…don’t take it personal…these jerks deserve a classification all their own. Just saying….:)

  7. Maipono says:

HilLIARy looked very weak while making this statement. Is she still ill?

  9. Bothrops says:

NYPD, NYFD and Homeland security units were on the scene within a minute. ““I must tell you that just before I got off the plane a bomb went off in New York and nobody knows what’s going on”. They knew what they needed to mount an effective response.

the first debate will be interesting.

will the female felon’s campaign staff find a smaller ear piece to send her prompts when she “short circuits” on stage? will dr okunola be on stage to catch her if she “overheats” and falls? will the female felon even appear for the debates or will a dr.’s note be submitted instead?

will the combover do pushups on stage ala jack palance? will he be allowed to drink trump branded water? will the combover read unreleased emails from the female felon’s private server?

  11. americantaxpayer says:

Hillarys unedited video statement is on iTube. In the statement, Hillary called the Terrorist attack a bombing as did Trump. Only difference was CNN and other news networks cut out her remarks calling it a bombing and left Trumps in. What the media is doing is simply un American….

  12. Ikefromeli says:

Donald J. Trump has so brazenly lied, so nakedly appealed to bigotry, and so frontally challenged the rule of law that he has made the elite media’s decorum absurd. He’s turned highbrow journalists into referees in a World Wrestling Entertainment match.

    • DPK says:

So, you’re naive enough to believe that the “elite” media has an unbiased decorum? How would you define “elite” media?

    • lespark says:

Ike, you are a funny man. You know that of course. What’s the bet. 10-1? You and madam Clingon, all mouth and no action.
Send money. That 737 burns fuel. That plane was empty. Lot of empty seats just like her rallies. She’s running on a decadent, tainted name.
Waiting for Trump to sweep CA, OR, WA.

    • Pocho says:

you are bigoted yourself thinking thoughts of what Trump said is bigotry. It takes one to come up with ideas of what someone said is really bigotry, lol. You think it and you know it’s within yourself.

      • Ikefromeli says:

Hahahha,,this is a quote of from the editorial board of Atlantic Magazine. It is truly astounding how unread, how uneducated, how unobjective, how myopic, how most of you lack a basic understanding on the most foundational of topics. The deplorable ones–well, yes if we are gauging this by intelligence, education and and the inability to read something other than the Fox News bylines…..

        • DPK says:

Ike is brilliant and so much smarter than the rest of us. If you doubt it, just ask him. His self-aggrandizement is a constant source of humor!

        • klastri says:

DPK – You’re right that he’s certainly a lot smarter than you. Good call.

  13. Ikefromeli says:

The core of Trump’s approach is to keep saying the enemy is “radical Islamic terrorism,” something that he (wrongly) claims Clinton never does. “To defeat Islamic terrorism,” he said in Ohio, “we must also speak out forcefully against a hateful ideology that provides the breeding ground for violence and terrorism to grow.” But there’s a good reason why both Presidents George W. Bush and Obama have been reluctant to speak of “Islamic terrorism,” and it’s not because Obama is a closet Muslim, as Trump has insinuated in the past. It’s because they realize that in the battle against terrorism, the United States cannot win unless it can get the support of most of the world’s 1.5 billion Muslims. By seeming to insult Islam and Muslims as Trump does, he plays into Islamic State and al Qaeda propaganda, which posits that there is a battle between Islam and the West.

But Trump doesn’t care about winning Muslim hearts and minds. He seems to think he can keep Americans safe by keeping all terrorists out of the country, as if it weren’t the case that many of our post-9/11 attackers — such as Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the Fort Hood, Texas, shooter, and Omar Mateen, the Orlando shooter — were homegrown.

Back on Dec. 7, 2015, Trump first proposed a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.” His Muslim ban helped him win the Republican nomination but has left him open to well-justified charges of religious bigotry. So for the general election, he has been desperately trying to modify his ban. He knows he wants to ban someone; he’s just not sure exactly who.

In early June, he said he would ban only immigrants — not all visitors — from countries where there is a “proven history of terrorism” against the United States. If taken seriously, this would apply to immigrants from Britain, France, and Italy, among other nations. A few days later, this was modified to suspend “immigration from regions linked with terrorism,” which hardly solves the problem, since just about every region of the world has been linked to terrorism. By mid-July, the ban had been modified yet again to apply to “any nation that has been compromised by terrorism,” a more nebulous category that could just as easily apply to the United States itself as to, say, Syria or Iraq.

Trump’s Aug. 15 speech included a call to stop immigration from “regions where adequate screening cannot take place” while adding another category of undesirables: He vowed to “screen out any who have hostile attitudes towards our country or its principles — or who believe that sharia law should supplant American law.” He never said, of course, how he would implement this kind of screening. Would U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents ask visitors if they harbor “hostile attitudes towards our country”? It apparently never occurs to Trump that terrorists might lie about their true views. He surely has never heard of taqiya, the Islamic term for lying to avoid persecution. His focus on “sharia law” — i.e., Islamic religious law — is also misbegotten. It’s like saying that he will screen out any visitors who believe that the authority of the pope supersedes that of the president of the United States. All observant Muslims obey sharia, just as observant Jews obey Halakha (rabbinical law) and observant Catholics obey papal law, but that doesn’t make them bad Americans or potential terrorists.

And what happens if a few stray terrorists should manage to slip through Trump’s vaunted border controls or if they happen to be here already? He constantly suggests that the answer to terrorism is “profiling,” which, he claims, we are not currently doing because of “political correctness.” Speaking to Fox & Friends on Monday, Trump said, “Our local police, they know who a lot of these people are. They are afraid to do anything about it because they don’t want to be accused of profiling. And they don’t want to be accused of all sorts of things.” Is there any evidence that law enforcement has identified a lot of terrorists but won’t do anything about it because of “political correctness”? Of course not. Just as there isn’t any evidence that, as Trump constantly claims, friends and neighbors of the Orlando and San Bernardino, California, shooters knew what they were up to but refused to tell law enforcement. And just as there isn’t any evidence that, as Trump also claims, “thousands and thousands” of Muslims in Jersey City, New Jersey, celebrated 9/11. What Trump seems to be suggesting is that law enforcement should employ a strategy of treating American Muslims as the enemy within — a self-fulfilling prophecy if ever there were one.

For all of his huffing and puffing, Trump has yet to offer any remotely workable solution to terrorism. What he offers is a lot of anti-Muslim animus that is guaranteed to backfire. It’s little wonder why the Islamic State is praying for a Trump victory. As noted by Matt Olsen, the former head of the National Counterterrorism Center, in an article for Time that did not receive the attention it deserved: “In August, one ISIS spokesman wrote: ‘I ask Allah to deliver America to Trump.’ Another supporter declared: ‘The ‘facilitation’ of Trump’s arrival in the White House must be a priority for jihadists at any cost!!!’ ISIS is working to drum up support for the candidate it has called ‘the perfect enemy.’”

It is deeply ironic and disturbing that the Islamic State’s dream candidate is posturing as the tough-on-terrorism candidate. If voters can’t see through Trump’s con game, terrorist groups like the Islamic State and al Qaeda will receive an unprecedented helping hand from America’s next president. Imagine what a conspiracy theorist — someone like Donald Trump — would make of that. Foreign Policy Magazine
