A 23-year-old man who died Sunday in a possible alcohol-related, one-car crash in South Kona was identified today by police as Jackson Mathers of Milolii.

An autopsy found he died of injuries from the crash, Hawaii island police said.

Police said Mathers lost control along in a turn in Mamalahoa Highway while heading southbound in Honalo near the 114-mile marker and crashed into a utility pole at about 2:35 a.m. Sunday.

He was ejected from a 2013 Subaru station wagon and sustained critical injuries. He was taken to Kona Community Hospital where he died several hours later.

Police say speed, inattention and alcohol may be factors in the crash.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call officer Justin Hooser at 324-4646 ext. 229. Anonymous tips can be made to CrimeStoppers at 961-8300.

Mathers was the 22nd traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared to 15 at this time last year.
