Core Brussels sprouts like pro

This is a gadget you’ll never knew you wanted until you’ve tried it.

The new Twist’n Sprout tool by Chef’n is used to trim and core Brussels sprouts. It’s so simple to use: Place the tool on the counter or hold it in your hand, whichever works better, then pierce the middle of the stem with the tip of the device, give the gadget (or sprout) a few twists and you’ll have a trimmed and cored sprout ready to roast, boil or broil.

I have never cooked Brussels sprouts (until I had to test this product), so I consulted my Brussels sprout-loving aunt, Kay Monis, to see if the product was worth its $7.99 price tag.

At first she said, “Who cores Brussels sprouts?” But then said she did trim the ends. So I asked her to give the product a try and after coring one sprout she said, “This is good!”

Does it work? Yes, very well.

Pros: May take a few seconds longer than trimming with a knife, but it removes the hard core in the center of the vegetable too. Doesn’t take much storage space. Comfortable to hold. Easy to use. Great for young, aspiring chefs who are not allowed to use knives.

Cons: Doesn’t always trim the bottom completely, but when I roasted the sprouts that didn’t affect the taste or texture. Hand washing is recommended, and the tip and blades are exposed.

Cost: Around $8 on various websites.

Worth it?: Yes, for those who eat a lot of Brussels sprouts or have youngsters who enjoy helping in the kitchen.
