UH Rainbow Warriors basketball coach Eran Ganot

The base salary of University of Hawaii men’s basketball coach Eran Ganot will rise to $330,000 by the final year (2019-‘20) of his contract thanks to an extension of the agreement.

The annual base goes from the previous $225,000 to $270,000, $285,000 and $300,000 before reaching its $330,000 peak, according to terms released today by Ganot and the school.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser had requested a copy of the agreement when it was signed last month.

Even with the increases, however, Ganot will make slightly less in his final year than Gib Arnold, who has been UH’s highest paid basketball coach. Arnold was receiving $344,000 when UH fired him in October of 2014.

The salary range for the position under UH policy is $185,000-$400,000.

Athletic director David Matlin said in a statement the extension is because, “Eran has created a ‘winning with integrity’ atmosphere.”

Ganot originally signed a three-year agreement in 2015 when he was hired to replace interim head coach Benjy Taylor.

But after guiding the ‘Bows to a school-record 28 victories and UH’s first NCAA Tournament victory in his rookie season Ganot and UH agreed to a two-year extension.

Ganot earned $75,000 in bonus pay for the season.

    • this is BS! Ganot coached a team that had a base of Gib’s recruits, he hasn’t earned half the salary of Gib’s in one year. It’s the players that made it to the NCAA’s last year, Ganot is only part of that success. He starts building his own team now since the core of Gib’s recruits are now gone. This is a joke of an article! Ganot hasn’t earned $200k/year in my eyes as still being an unproving commodity.

      • Maybe so but he still had to keep them together and have unity. Could have easily gone another way. Same with Benji everyone said he did a fabulous job but he inherited the team.

        • That’s true about Benji but why wasn’t Benji given an extension instead of some B.S by Matlin.

      • And what did Gib do with Gib’s recruits? Nothing, he could barely make .500 in the Big West…In one year, Ganot took the same team that Gib couldn’t do anything with and led them to the greatest season in UH history. Oh, and by the way, Gib also gave us the gift that keeps on giving, you know, the reason why Ganot had such difficulties recruiting this year, the reason why we have no post season this year. Before commenting about college basketball, maybe you should learn about college basketball.

  • A middle school basketball coach would have hitchhiked a ride to the Big Dance last season with the team that Gib Arnold built. Coach Ganot looks like he is going to be good for Hawaii but he has to build his own team and coach them to the Big Dance like he is doing, before we can compare him to Gib Arnold…

    • Ganot knew what was coming down the pike accepting the job! 1 year on the job as a rookie head coach and he’s already trying to con UH into giving him a raise? But really if others done it before him, why not try to soak UH today?

      • Trump would say you need to take advantage when you can, doesn’t everyone who works try to make more money. Or would you turn down a raise. Coaching and playing profession is a short term employment and you need to make the most of it.

  • The most relevant comparison isn’t to Gib’s salary but rather to what other Big West coaches are currently making.

Right now the highest paid coach in the conference is Dan Monson at Long Beach State, whose total compensation is capped at $800,000 and includes a base salary of $341,562, a retention bonus of $110,000, a share of the revenue the team earns from playing “buy games” on the road from which he received $285,000 last season, and other performance incentive bonuses. Obviously that’s far more than what Ganot will be receiving, but of course Monson has far more experience than Ganot (entering his 19th year as a head coach, with stints at Gonzaga and Minnesota) and many more coaching accomplishments on his resume.

A better comparison might be to Russell Turner at UC Irvine, who has been a head coach for six seasons and won one Big West tournament title and one Big West coach of the year award. Turner reportedly had a base salary of $310,000 last year. He also receives a share of his team’s “buy game” revenues, which amounted to $60,000 last season and could jump to $100,000 this season. Throw in other performance incentive bonuses and his total compensation this year could be in the $400,000-$500,000 range.

Based on the above, Ganot’s new contract terms seem reasonable and fair to me.

  • Just adding more to the buy-out when the fans demand that he be fired. This is his year to show he can win, and quite frankly, fans don’t buy tickets to watch “integrity.” After the first few games, watch the fans’ interest die with each loss or ho hum win. The real Ganot offense will show up which is a deliberate, pick and roll, game that will bore the fans to tears.

  • Unreal, Ganot one year on the job training and the SA already siding him like the media props Hillary. Insanity here. Ganot SOAK UH for all you can while you can!

  • I’m sure that Ganot’s “integrity” is what drove him to demand more money. What, more money for integrity, who does he think he is, Duterte?

  • Ganot hasn’t proved himself yet as last year’s team was really not his players. All the starters were Gib’s recruits and the fact that they won 27 or 28 games is an accomplishment but I assumed they would have won that many games because of their experience and maturation from the year before playing with Benji. Not only that, he lacked the discipline to control the team and even Ferd Lewis wrote about it last February or one of the sports writers…Ganot came in asking for a 2 yr. extension while the A.D. shafted, I mean, shafted Benji leading him on by saying keep winning and we will see about a contract for the next several yrs….That was a bunch of B.S. Matlin knew all along that he was bringing in Ganot and that Benji was out. Well, we shall see how well Ganot does as a coach and please don’t give me this malarky that, well, UH is on probation and that give Ganot couple years to turn things around…..Yeah, well, we are paying him quarter of a million dollars for the next several years while he turns things around…what a farce……..give me a break.
