CINDY ELLEN RUSSELL / SEPT. 2

Straub Medical Center nurse Janelle Carroll administered a Hepatitis A vaccine to Brian Murdock on Sept. 2.

Another case of hepatitis A has been identified by the state Department of Health, bringing the total number of cases to 289.

Seventy-one of those sickened required hospitalization, officials said.

The department identified raw scallops that were served at Genki Sushi restaurants on Oahu and Kauai as the likely source of this outbreak. Genki Sushi restaurants were closed for cleaning, but have since reopened.

Although the 50-day maximum incubation period from the date of the scallops embargo has passed, health officials say they continue to be alert for people who have had onset of illness earlier but may present late to a clinician, as well as possible secondary cases.

Secondary cases have been rare in this outbreak and have been limited to household members of cases or close contacts of cases, officials said.
