Hurricane Seymour’s rapid intensification continued today as the storm reached category 4 status with sustained winds of 150 mph.

Seymour could get even stronger in the warm waters of the East Pacific near Mexico tonight, but should rapidly weaken toward the end of the week as it moves over cooler waters and encounters windshear.

At 5 p.m., the hurricane was moving west-northwest at 15 mph about 690 miles southwest of Baja California, Mexico. It’s expected to turn to the northwest by Wednesday night and then veer to the north-northwest on Thursday as it weakens.

At this point, the storm is expected to stay far off shore and is not a threat to land.

Forecasters in Honolulu said Seymour should send surf to east shores of the Hawaiian islands this weekend.

Some of the moisture associated with Seymour could bring rains to Southern California this weekend.
