Road sweep lands Wahine volleyball in first place

Sophomore hitter McKenna Granato put down 12 kills and No. 14 Hawaii moved into a tie with Long Beach State in the Big West volleyball standings tonight with a sweep of UC Riverside in Riverside, Calif.

Senior opposite Nikki Taylor added 11 kills for the Rainbow Wahine in the 25-10, 25-18, 25-22 win over the Highlanders (6-14, 1-8). Taylor passed Diana Jessie for 12th place on the program’s career kill list and now has 1,270.

Courtesy of Long Beach State’s 3-2 loss to UC Irvine tonight, the Wahine (16-5, 8-1) and 49ers (14-8, 8-1) share the league lead. On Thursday it was announced that Long Beach State’s 3-2 win over UC Irvine last month had been nullified after a protest by UCI was upheld; the match between the 49ers and Anteaters will be replayed at a later date.

Hawaii travels to play Cal State Fullerton (6-16, 1-7) on Saturday. The Wahine host Long Beach State on Nov. 4 in a match that could determine the conference title.

Also tonight for Hawaii, junior libero Savanah Kahakai had 12 digs and Taylor had four of the team’s aces. The Wahine outblocked the Highlanders 11-3, with junior middle Emily Maglio in on six.

Freshman hitter Mickayla Sherman had 11 kills for UCR.
