McGill dominates at HIC Pro

North Shore’s Finn McGill recorded the highest score in Day 2 of the HIC Pro on Friday at Sunset Beach. McGill, the youngest surfer in the 112-man field, posted a 14.80 and advanced to Round 4 with a dozen other local surfers. The 16-year-old also recorded the highest single-wave score on Friday with an 8.93.

Hawaii’s Tanner Hendrickson, Mason Ho, Koa Smith and Joel Centeio also clinched their heats, while Cody Young, Sunny Garcia, Kekoa Cazimero, Ian Walsh, Noa Mizuno, Alex Smith, Chris Foster and Makuakai Rothman finished as runners-up and advanced to Round 4.

Seven more local surfers will compete in the final three heats of Round 3 today, surf permitting.

UH softball opens tourney with sweep

Hawaii pitchers Brittany Hitchcock and Kanani Aina Cabrales earned shutout wins and the Rainbow Wahine softball team opened the Kama‘aina Tournament with a doubleheader sweep against Chaminade and BYU-Hawaii on Friday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Hitchcock held Chaminade to two hits and struck out two in six innings in UH’s 2-0 win over the Silverswords. Heather Morales drove in both runs for UH and earned a save with an inning of scoreless relief. Chaminade’s Luana Moreno allowed five hits, struck out two and walked two over six innings.

Aina Cabrales struck out 14 of the 21 batters she faced and held BYUH to two hits in UH’s 7-0 win in the second game. Morales went 3-for-3 with a triple and a home run and drove in four runs. Rachael Turner also homered for UH.

UH men’s golf team tied for 10th

The University of Hawaii men’s golf team posted a 295 in the first round of the Ka‘anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational on Friday at Ka‘anapali’s Royal Course. The Rainbow Warriors are tied for 10th with Kansas in the 24-team field. South Carolina remains in first place with 282 strokes.

Senior Pono Tokioka led the Rainbow Warriors with a 1-under 70 and is tied for ninth place, followed by freshman Nick Nelson (71), senior Skye Inakoshi (73), and sophomore Cameron Kaneko (74).
