Maui firefighters used Global Positioning System to find a 31-year-old Makawao woman who got lost Sunday evening while jogging in the Makawao Forest Reserve, the Maui Fire Department reported.

The jogger called 911 for help at 6:13 p.m., saying she was lost. Makawao firefighters located the woman’s car in the Kahakapau Loop Trail parking lot in upper Piiholo.

Using GPS information obtained by dispatchers from the woman’s cell phone, fire crews both hiked and drove in on all-terrain vehicles to find her.

They found her uninjured after 20 minutes into the marked trail and hiked out with her, the Maui Fire Department said in a news release, adding she was embarrassed but did the right thing.

The Fire Department said Monday remaining in place on a marked trail helped firefighters find this lost person quickly.
