1 dead, 2 injured in crash that closed Kamehameha Highway

This map shows the location of an accident that closed Kamehameha Highway in Kaaawa near Trout Farm Road.
A 50-year-old man died in a two-car collision near the former Crouching Lion Inn early today.
The accident occurred at about 5:19 a.m. at 51-666 Kamehameha Highway near Trout Farm Road in Kahana Valley, and involved a Mustang and a pickup truck, according to Honolulu Fire Spokesman Capt. David Jenkins.
Jenkins and police said the Mustang was traveling northbound on the highway and collided head-on with the pickup truck traveling southbound.
The Mustang driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has yet to be released.
The pickup driver and passenger, both approximately 50, were taken to Queen’s Medical Center in serious condition.
Police closed both lanes on the highway to investigate the crash and reopened at about 10 a.m.
This is the 50th traffic-related fatality on Oahu compared to 44 at the same time last year.

Although the Ford Mustang has no real design flaw that leads directly to crashes or road accidents, it is still statistically one of the most dangerous cars in the world. Reports indicate that collisions and deaths involving the Mustang are four times as frequent as with the average car. The most plausible explanation is that the car is relatively cheap compared to its power and speed, meaning that inexperienced drivers can pick up one while still young. These drivers are far more likely to lose control at high speed, leading to deadly accidents.

even back in the day it seemed my older bother and his friends would have bad accidents with mustangs (’60s-70’s)
This area is notorious for accidents! I should know, I grew up in the area!
A lot of it stems from impeding tourists, Bus Drivers,DUI, Late to Work Drivers ,”Risk Takers” and inattentive motorist. It’s still a beautiful drive just take your time ,leave early,turn up the music and ……enjoy the drive.

Wet roads. Slow down. Drive Safe. Morning news said the driver of the Mustang crossed the double yellow lined road and struck the truck head on.
That’s the scary part – you could be driving perfectly safely when a reckless driver does something like cross the center line and you can’t avoid it. Some posters in another article yesterday thought we should never criticize the drivers who cause fatal accidents, which I do not understand AT ALL. They are a threat to innocent people.
Totally agree. How many times you hear of drivers crossing into the oncoming lane and hit the oncoming car head on. Distracted driving, talking/texting on cellphone. Pay attention. Like I tell my ohana and friends, I consider myself a safe and cautious driver, but, it’s the other driver I worry about. I don’t know if they’re on their cellphone, if they’re rushing cuz they’re late, if they’re in a bad mood, whatevers. I try to drive defensively, but, I can’t control the way the other guy/gal is driving. It’s close to the holidays, DRIVE SAFE EVERYONE.

Sadly, in the majority of head-on collisions, the driver causing the accident is the one most likely to survive due the instinctive reflex to turn his vehicle away from the approaching danger. Doing so typically exposes the passenger side of his vehicle to most of the impact energy. That’s why you often hear of the driver walking away while his passenger remains dead at the scene.

As I recall, “some posters” yesterday took exception to some other poster’s ridiculous and callous claim that passengers in a car that struck a tree deserved to die. There were also a few arguments made against that kind of stink talk being made without knowing all the facts and without any regard for the friends and relatives of the deceased.
Who argued that drivers that cause accidents should never be criticized?
All this accidents and just at holiday time. Even here on the big island people drive so fast and take chances trying to beat the traffic lights and on coming cars.
Everyone please drive carefully its not worth the risk.

It does make you wonder at the wisdom of betting your life on a Smart Car (let alone a bicycle, scooter, moped or motorcycle) for your daily commute. The mix of vehicles on the road has steadily been skewed toward heavier and heavier SUVs, pickup trucks, minivans and commercial vehicles. High gasoline prices tend to mitigate this trend, but our recent low prices (relative to most of Asia or Europe) encourages the private purchase of “bigger is better” personal transportation.
I do realize the choice of what vehicle we end up with is mostly determined by what we can afford. Nevertheless, it’s of little comfort that you can be a safe driver and entirely in the right, yet still end up severely hurt or dead. A big mass trumps a little mass just about all of the time.
Not just bigger/heavier cars, but little to no accountability if you do end up injuring or killing someone.

According to some posting on a Facebook group, the car (Mustang) had been reported to the police on numerous occasions for reckless driving and speeding. Members of this group have been posting for months making members aware of this vehicle and its driver’s behavior. They have reported that he is a resident in the nearby Makaua Village apartments. It was also shared that the people in the truck was just heading to work, and auwe, the Mustang crossed over to their lane, and hit them head-on. I guess the Mustang driver may have tempted fate one too many times. In any case, prayers go out to those who were injured and also to the family of the person who passed away.

Maybe Jesus was looking out for the rest of the innocent people on the road.
I heard the same thing on the news. If this is indeed true, glad he is no longer able to threaten any more lives with his bad driving.
