Camy Aguinaldo scored 23 points as the running Raiders of ‘Iolani edged Kamehameha 55-50 on Tuesday night at ‘Iolani’s gym.
The Raiders took the lead in the second quarter and opened it to 12 points, never relinquishing it. The win pushed No. 3-ranked ‘Iolani (3-2) into sole possession of second place in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls basketball standings behind Maryknoll.
Kawai Kahalehoe scored 10 of her 12 points in the second quarter, and Tori Lynn Maeda added 11 points and seven assists without a turnover.
Jewel Paaluhi-Caulk scored 19 points, including five treys, to lead No. 6 Kamehameha (1-2). The visitors could have moved into second place, but couldn’t keep up with the home team.
“Tempo is definitely to our advantage. Playing in the (‘Iolani) Classic helped us play at a quicker speed,” Maeda said.
“We’re a running team, in general,” said Aguinaldo, who shot 9-for-14 from the field and added four rebounds.
The Warriors relied heavily on center Kalina Obrey, who finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
“Kalina is bigger than our posts, she’s quick and it’s hard to guard a lefty,” Raiders coach Dean Young said.
The Warriors didn’t find her often in the final quarter, when Obrey took just one field-goal attempt.
“We don’t get her the ball enough,” Kamehameha coach Joe Cho said. “Princy (Paaluhi-Clark) is our best shooter. I know it’s a team game, but we didn’t get them the ball enough and we had lapses on defense.”
Obrey, a 5-foot-11 sophomore, scored nine first-quarter points as Kamehameha took an 18-15 lead.
‘Iolani then switched from man to zone defense, putting Kamehameha in a funk for the next two-plus quarters. The Raiders, who rarely use zone, had just worked on it at practice a few days ago.
They closed the first half with a 7-0 run, getting a corner 3 from Kahalehoe, a steal and layup by Aguinaldo, and a 10-foot runner at the buzzer by Maeda for a 32-26 halftime lead.
‘Iolani opened the third quarter with a 10-2 run, running the fastbreak out of its 2-3 zone. Skylar Nakata scored inside on a pass from Maeda, Aguinaldo hit an elbow floater and two blazing layups, and suddenly the Raiders led 40-28.
It wasn’t until the fourth quarter when Paaluhi-Caulk began to spot up, hitting three treys in a row to bring the Warriors within 52-47 with more than 4 minutes remaining.
‘Iolani remained in a zone, however — Obrey took only one shot from the field in the final quarter — and Paaluhi-Caulk made them pay one more time with an NBA-range wing 3 to make it 52-50 with 3 minutes to go.
“Prince made some tough shots,” Maeda said.
But the Warriors missed their next two shots and ‘Iolani pulled the ball out. Taylor Wu missed a layup with 1:05 left, giving Kamehameha a chance to tie or take the lead. Paaluhi-Caulk moved back to the top and got free on a double screen, but missed an open 3.
Wu later inbounded from the sideline to Aguinaldo for an easy layup, giving the Raiders a 54-50 lead with less than 25 seconds left. The Warriors then threw the ball away for a backcourt violation with 11 ticks left, and Maeda made one of two free throws with 6.5 seconds left.
