A 44-year-old Omao man admitted today that he fatally shot his 88-year-old neighbor on New Year’s Eve in 2013, the Kauai Prosecutor’s Office said.

Giovanni Lictawa Corpuz pleaded guilty in Fifth Circuit court to second-degree murder in the death of Amby Cruz, a retired Lihue Plantation mechanic.

Sentencing is scheduled for April 5 before Fifth Circuit Judge Kathleen Watanabe.

Corpuz fled after the shooting and was en route to the Philippines when he was caught in Taipei by the FBI with the help of the Taiwanese government. He was extradited to Hawaii six days later.

  • I’d like to know why a 44yo man would want to kill an 88yo neighbor. Was he having an affair with the younger man’s wife? I don’t think so. Was he posturing and showing “big body”? Did both of them get drunk and the young guy kill him in a fit of rage? Was it for money? Why?
