Rainbow Wahine pick up first Big West win

Hawaii forward Lahni Salanoa scored a career-high 19 points and the Rainbow Wahine basketball team picked up its first Big West win of the season with a 60-50 victory over Cal State Fullerton tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Salanoa hit two 3-pointers and went 6-for-13 overall for the Rainbow Wahine (5-10, 1-2 BWC), who took control with a 13-0 run in the third quarter.

UH guard Briana Harris finished with 14 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field and forward Makenna Woodfolk added nine points.

The teams went into halftime tied at 24 and the Titans led briefly before UH broke away in the third quarter. Salanoa ignited the run with 3-pointer to give UH a 29-28 lead. Julissa Tago drained a 3 for her first basket of the night and Harris split two Titan defenders for a transition layup. After two Salanoa free throws, Woodfolk’s jumper extended the lead to 39-28.

Cal State Fullerton guard Iman Lathan scored 10 of her game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter and the Titans closed to six with 6:17 left and again at the 2:21 mark. But UH went 8-for-10 from the free-throw line down the stretch to hold on.

The Titans (3-13, 0-3) finished 0-for-15 from 3-point range and committed 21 turnovers with UH scoring 19 points off takeaways.

The Rainbow Wahine head back to California next week for a two-game road trip to face Cal Poly on Jan. 19 and UC Santa Barbara two days later.
