Hawaii wide receiver Ben Scruton (36) is mobbed by defensive back Jalen Rogers (19) after making a first down on a fake punt during the second half of a college football game between the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors and the Massachusetts Minutemen. The two teams will play each other at the beginning of the 2017 yeason in Massachusetts.

The University of Hawaii football team will open the 2017 season on the road against UMass on Aug. 26, school officials announced today.

The game originally was scheduled for Oct. 7.

The Rainbow Warriors took advantage of an exemption that allows them to open play on so-called Week Zero — a week ahead of the usual start to the football season. The exemption usually applies to UH’s home games. But the Warriors received an NCAA waiver making the exemption applicable for a road game.
