H-1 freeway to close in West Oahu on Sunday
The H-1 Freeway will close in both directions in West Oahu on Sunday morning so that utility crews can replace a high-voltage power line that fell during last weekend’s windstorm, according to Hawaiian Electric Co. officials.
The closure will take place from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday between the Kualaka’i Parkway and Kamokila Boulevard interchanges, according to a HECO release. The freeway will open earlier if crews finish ahead of schedule.
Drivers will still be able to get across that West Oahu stretch via detours onto Kualaka’i and Farrington Highway. Nonetheless, they should plan ahead, expect delays and consider postponing travel until the work is done, HECO officials said. The company will provide live updates on the work via its Facebook page, the release stated.
The release added that working in daylight hours will allow the utility to complete the work more quickly than if it had been scheduled at night.
“We apologize for the inconvenience to the community,” HECO Senior Vice President for Operations Ron Cox said in a statement. “We know there’s no good time to close the freeway but we worked with the Department of Transportation to choose a time that we hoped would be the least disruptive.”

It’s a10:10 tee time and roys doesn’t open up that early and I can’t get a masseuse earlier than 11:00! Dang life is tough!

You got that much money just take your helicopter. Problem solved. You can even get your massage and join the mile high club in the process.
Go to the Shopping Center down the road from Roy’s and the golf course the center is across from the Ihilani and Aulani. They open at 5:30 for some places and at 6 for some others. Get a good cup of coffee at Island Coffee and some bagels or rolls or go to the Island Country store and get a nice breakfast from there it opens at 6 AM can also get nice fresh fruit. These are all cheaper than Roy’s and either Aulani or Ihilani. Nice places to go if you get up early and jog in the area.
A lot of road construction which includes elec work is done at night, why cant the electric work? Why both sides of the freeway? Why did the tran. line get damaged from just a strong trade wind event? Its called management or in this case lack thereof. PUC where are you?
the article explained that the utility would be able to complete the job more quickly during the day than at night. the freeway would not have to be closed as long. and since they’re using a helicopter cholo thinks it’s a much safer deal if they work during daylight hours. safety first!
Its not about the convenice of the utility. If managed right the job can be saftey done at night though it might take more time but way less disruption to West Oahu. You must not live on the West side because if you did you would know shutting down both sides of the freeway for 4 or more hours is a big deal. Also why did a strong trade wind storm bring down a HV line…whats in store for us should a real storm happen? Again, PUC where are you?

Cholo…IMO it (freeway closing) should not happen at all. Guess no deep thinking here. Under the guise of safety it is a fallacy to think its ok for HECO to be mis-managed and inefficient. Again where is the PUC?
It would be good if they explained what the H1 freeway has to do with replacing a broken power line over the mountains. Are they planning to use the freeway as a staging area?
the lines that fell on saturday night was crossing the freeway..so they need to use helicopters to string the line across the freeway
