Firefighters extinguished a fire at a duplex in the McCully-Moiliili area early today.

The fire started just after 3 a.m. at 2275 Date St. When firefighters arrived, they observed gray smoke billowing from the rear of the structure, said Honolulu Fire Spokesman Capt. David Jenkins.

Firefighters entered the home and found flames in the kitchen. They brought the fire under control by 3:11 a.m. and extinguished it five minutes later.

Jenkins said two people were inside the duplex at the time of the fire. They smelled smoke and were able to escape.

No injuries were reported. The American Red Cross has dispatched a volunteer crew to assist affected residents.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The damage estimate has yet to be determined.
