Trump tells Xi he’ll honor ‘One China’ policy

White House press secretary Sean Spicer called on a reporter during the daily news briefing at the White House in Washington today.
WASHINGTON >> The White House says President Donald Trump told Chinese President Xi Jinping in a phone call tonight that the U.S. would honor Washington’s “one China” policy, which has been at the center of friction between the global powers since Trump’s election.
Trump “agreed, at the request of President Xi,” to honor the policy, the White House says.
Before taking office, Trump questioned Washington’s “one China policy,” which shifted diplomatic recognition from self-governing Taiwan to China in 1979. He said it was open to negotiation.
China has bristled at the “one China” comments by Trump, who wants to pressure Beijing to narrow its huge trade surplus with America.
The two leaders also invited each other to visit their respective countries.

President Donald J. Trump and President Xi Jinping of China had a lengthy telephone conversation on Thursday evening. The two leaders discussed numerous topics and President Trump agreed, at the request of President Xi, to honor our “one China” policy.
December through February: China gives Trump the silent treatment. “Stung by an earlier, and unorthodox, telephone call between Mr. Trump and the president of Taiwan, Mr. Xi had not spoken to the American leader since Nov. 14, the week after he was elected….Relations between Washington and Beijing had been frozen since December.”
February 8: A Chinese surveillance plane “inadvertently” buzzes an American P-3C Orion in the vicinity of the disputed Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea.
February 9: Trump caves in and agrees to honor the One China policy.
Trump really showed them, didn’t he? Now China knows for sure that Trump’s threats and bluster are entirely hollow. That should do wonders for our negotiations with China on trade issues.
Can anyone point me to any great deal that Trump has ever negotiated? I can think of plenty of disasters (Trump Air, the Plaza Hotel, his Atlantic City casinos, etc.), and I can think of plenty of ordinary deals he’s closed (all of his golf courses). But have there been any that were really spectacular? None come to mind, unless you count his ability to talk his bankers into sparing him personal bankruptcy after his businesses went bust in 1990. Or maybe the way he snookered all the poor schmoes who bought stock in his entertainment company when he took it public in 1995.
But how about a straightforward real estate deal where he negotiated a bargain price and made out like a bandit? Are there any?
if you’re alluding to that trump is a failure just being a billionaire pretty much says otherwise. not that he’s perfect of course but cholo is pretty sure he has negotiating skills to become that filthy rich. well just trying to find some optimism in the deluge of negative press.
IRT cholo: Don’t take this as beating on you, I’m NOT. But do we really know if Trump is a billionaire? He still hasn’t released his tax returns in order to verify his financial/economic status/standing. As for the China/Taiwan issue, Taiwan is a de-facto independent nation. China just needs to accept the reality of it all, so in this instance I agree (I think it’s going to snow in h*ll) with Trump’s initial position. Of course now that Trump has caved, well so much for the posturing and blustering. Paper tiger. Sad.
This is just the beginning of a “deal” with China.
They wanted recognition from him as “one China”, he just gave it to them even though they’ve already had it for years. Now sit back and wait for the trade negotiations to commence which will happen. We’ve been on the short end of trade with them for a very long time but that will improve. Giving them the recognition they’ve already had was a bargaining chip which in reality cost us nothing because they already had it. Tensions will now ease that’ll open the door for renegotiated trade…”The two leaders also invited each other to visit their respective countries”. That in itself is a win right there.
A deal starts with both sides wanting something. Give it some time, it’s been less than a month since he’s been in office.
The Chinese vs. Paper Tiger Trump? My money’s on the Chinese.
This is the patter where campaign rhetoric meets reality. Agree adhering to the one China policy just maintains existing US policy. You seem to imply that Chump “gave” China something which is really not the case. The policy already existing and the Chinese knew Chump would not abandon the policy because of the political and economic consequences.
