The owner of a 35-foot cabin motorboat has requested extra time to remove his boat from Kihei Beach, where it ran aground on Wednesday afternoon.
The “Hanamana” broke loose of its offshore mooring near South Kihei Road and Uwapo Road and was stranded on a shoreline area fronting the Kihei Canoe Club.
Owner William Domen Jr. informed Coast Guard and the Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation of the incident. Under DLNR guidelines, Domen had 72 hours to remove the vessel, which is uninsured. Domen asked DOBOR for additional time to complete the task, according to a DLNR release.
DOBOR officials inspected the boat, which appeared intact, and determined that it was not at risk of further damage.
The DLNR release indicated that the removal could occur as soon as this evening, during high tide, via an ocean channel.
