Honolulu firefighters rescued a man who was trapped in a culvert in Hawaii Kai early today.

At approximately 3:30 a.m., some people heard calls for help by the man who was inside a metal grate-covered junction box near a townhome complex at 7012 Hawaii Kai Drive. Honolulu Fire Spokesman Capt. David Jenkins said the man, described to be in his 30s, was crawling through a storm drain for hours and he couldn’t find his way out.

Firefighters used saws to cut the metal grate to reach the man inside the junction box that’s about 5 to 6 feet deep.

No injuries were reported.
