University of Hawaii sophomore Metin Aydin set a school record for a second straight day and placed 19th in the 100-yard backstroke at the NCAA men’s swimming and diving championships on Friday at Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind.
A day after setting the school record in the 200 individual medley, Aydin posted a time of 46.27 seconds in Friday’s preliminaries to lower the UH record he set on Feb. 27 at the Bulldog Last Chance Invitational. He entered the NCAA meet as the 30th seed in the event with a time of 46.50.
Prior to Aydin’s arrival at UH, Peter Thew held the 100 backstroke record of 47.51 since 2004.
Aydin closes the meet today in the 200 backstroke, his strongest event.
UH sophomore Johan Sandell placed 41st in 3-meter diving with a total score of 285.90 in preliminaries. Sandell competes in platform diving today. UH ranks 37th in the team standings.
Reese, Claye to host clinic
A track and field clinic featuring multiple Olympic medalists and world champions Brittney Reese and Will Claye will be held Monday at Punahou School.
The clinic is open to all boys and girls age 7 and above.
Reese is a six-time world champion, won the gold medal in the long jump at the 2012 London Olympics, and took silver in 2016 in Brazil. She is the jumps coach at Mesa Community College in San Diego.
Claye is a three-time Olympic medalist, and in 2012 became the first to medal in both the long and triple jump in the same Olympics in 70 years.
Jeremy Fischer (sprints), Queen Harrison (hurdles), Bryan McBride (high jump), Tony Ciarelli (discus) and Rutger Smith (shot put) will also be instructing.

UH Hilo swept in doubleheader
The Hawaii Hilo baseball team was swept by Azusa Pacific in a doubleheader in Azusa, Calif., at the Cougar Baseball Complex.
The Vulcans (3-13, 3-11 PacWest) had a 3-0 lead in the third inning but fell victim to the hot bats of the Cougars (24-2, 10-2), who finished with a 12-3 victory. Leadoff hitter Mychael Goudreau had a game-high three hits, which were all doubles.
The Cougars rallied again in the second game, turning a 2-0 third-inning deficit into a 5-2 victory. Waipahu alum and San Jose State transfer Dylan Sugimoto went 2-for-4 and hit his first collegiate home run.

Brittany Vasquez was 2-for-5 at the plate with two walks and a run to lead the Seasiders, who fell to 10-20 overall and 7-11 in the PacWest. Soraya Shahbazian went 5-for-7 with three runs and four RBIs to lead the Lancers (22-7, 16-2 PacWest).
