Maui man dies while free diving
Maui fire rescue crews recovered the body of a 29-year-old free diver at Oneuli Beach in Makena.
His name has yet to be released.
The Maui man was free diving with friends about a quarter-mile off of Oneuli Beach — also known as Black Sand Beach — when he ran into trouble Thursday afternoon, according to a news release from the Maui Fire Department.
His friends tried to reach him but strong currents hindered their efforts.
Rescue divers aboard Air 1 responded and recovered the unresponsive free diver from the bottom of the ocean floor, approximately 100 feet below the surface.
He was airlifted to a nearby golf course fairway where paramedics declared him dead.
