Suspect in Kahala hit-and-run released

Police released a 45-year-old woman who was arrested on suspicion of causing bodily injury to two visitors in a hit-and-run at Kahala Mall.

The woman was released from custody Tuesday night pending further investigation.

At about 6:30 p.m. Sunday, a 35-year-old woman was pinned between two vehicles in a parking lot fronting Whole Foods Market, Emergency Medical Services said.

Police said a driver fled the crash scene in a white vehicle.

Paramedics transported the injured woman and a 37-year-old man, both visitors from Japan, to a hospital in serious condition.

Police arrested the suspect at her Kaimuki home Monday night.

School booster arrested in $10K theft case

Big Island police have arrested a 42-year-old Hilo woman after she allegedly stole more than $10,000 from the Waiakea Intermediate School Ukulele Band Booster Club.

Police arrested the woman who serves as the club’s vice president Tuesday afternoon on suspicion of second-degree theft and false reporting to law enforcement authorities.

Police said the suspect reported to patrol officers Tuesday that an unknown suspect entered her Waiakea Uka home and removed personal belongings including cash belonging to the booster club.

During investigation, police determined the woman “took the money for herself, staged the burglary and made the fictitious report to police about a break-in,” police said in a news release.

The suspect remains in custody as police investigate.

Parents alerted after nude-stranger incident

State education officials remind parents to reinforce safety tips to their children following a recent incident in Hawaii Kai.

At about 3:30 p.m. Monday, a man in his 30s was driving a Chevrolet on Makaweli Street when he approached a teenager to ask for directions. When the teen got closer to the vehicle, he noticed the man was naked.

The teen fled and notified an adult of the incident, which was reported to police.

Koko Head Elementary School sent a letter to parents Tuesday to inform them about the incident and advised them to reinforce safety tips to their children about “stranger danger,” such as never talking to or taking anything from a stranger and never going anywhere with or accepting rides from strangers.
