Forecasters are predicting a run of wet weather through the weekend and into next week as an unsettled weather pattern takes hold above the state.
According to the National Weather Service, a front is expected to stall over the islands while a “potent” low wind pattern destabilizes the atmosphere. Maui County is expected to experience the heaviest rainfall during this period.
A flash flood watch is in effect for Kahoolawe, Lanai, Maui, Molokai, Oahu and Hawaii island through Sunday afternoon.
According to the weather service, rain will affect windward areas as well as urban and leeward areas, which are more vulnerable to flooding.
The weather service also issued a winter storm watch for the summit and upper-slope areas of Hawaii island, effective from this morning to Sunday afternoon, with up to 6 inches of snowfall possible. The public is advised to expect poor road conditions in the affected areas.
Hawaii County Civil Defense further warns of debris, runoff and ponding. Power outages may occur If lightning strikes.
