The San Jose Police Department remains on the scene of a fatal double shooting that ended with a police involved shooting in the Willow Glen neighborhood of San Jose, Calif., Thursday, May 4, 2017. San Jose police shot and killed a gunman after he killed the parents of an ex-girlfriend and then turned the gun on officers, the police chief Eddie Garcia said.

SAN JOSE, Calif. >> San Jose police fatally shot a gunman after he killed the parents of an ex-girlfriend and then turned the gun on officers, the police chief said.

“It’s a tragic incident perpetrated by evil,” San Jose Police Chief Eddie Garcia said earlier today at a news conference.

The chief said the man had a history of mental illness and domestic violence, The Mercury News reports.

The ex-girlfriend had a restraining order against the gunman and was not in the house at the time, Garcia said. The couple’s 13-year-old son was also inside the home but the gunman released him during the two-hour long confrontation Wednesday night.

Police said the relationship between the suspect and the couple’s daughter ended sometime last year. Garcia said the 911 call was made by the couple’s adult son, who escaped the house.

Officers tried to talk the man into surrendering, but Garcia said a SWAT officer took out the gunman after he pointed a gun at police from inside the house.

“It’s just a horrible, horrible crime,” Garcia said. “Again, dealing with someone who is mentally ill, who had choices. And he didn’t give this family choices. He didn’t give my officer a choice.”

This is the second officer-involved shooting in two days in San Jose.

On Tuesday, San Jose police fatally shot a 28-year-old after he charged at an officer with a pair of knives during a family disturbance.
