A physician shows a dose of the measles-mumps-rubella, or MMR, vaccine. The mumps outbreak in Hawaii has swelled to 42 cases this year.

Three more cases of mumps were confirmed today by the state Department of Health, bringing the 2017 outbreak total in Hawaii to 42, the highest number of infections here in 16 years.

Health officials report that the disease has been confirmed in children and adults, both vaccinated and unvaccinated. All the cases have been on Oahu, except for one on Kauai.

Recent infections are linked to children and adults at Central Middle School and the Job Corps Center in Waimanalo. The department said it is working with both the state Department of Education and Job Corps Center to notify anyone who may have come into contact with the confirmed cases during their infectious periods.

To date, none of the infected individuals have been admitted into the hospital, officials said.
