A 25-year-old man accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend in Kalihi Valley was charged with second-degree assault on Monday.

Dustin Ferrentino-Raymond remains in custody in lieu of $100,000 bail and was scheduled to appear today at his District Court preliminary hearing. He was initially charged on May 13 with attempted second-degree murder for allegedly shooting the victim, 31, in the upper back.

After investigation, prosecutors dropped the attempted murder charge and instead will pursue second-degree assault, according to spokesman Chuck Parker of the Honolulu Prosecutor’s Office.

Ferrentino-Raymond has remained in custody for violating terms of probation under the HOPE (Hawaii’s Opportunity Probation with Enforcement) program.

The shooting occurred at about 12:30 a.m. on May 12, when police said the victim and her passenger was traveling in a black Lexus. As they turned onto Nalanieha Street from Piliwai Street, the victim said she saw Ferrentino-Raymond pull up in a brown Ford Explorer. He then allegedly shot at her four times with a revolver, according to a court document.

One bullet struck the 31-year-old woman on the left side of her upper back. Police said she drove off and flagged down an officer near the 2600 block of Kalihi Street. Emergency Medical Services transported her to a hospital in serious condition. The passenger didn’t suffer any injuries.

Police that night located and arrested Ferrentino-Raymond at a parking structure of The Plaza Hotel on North Nimitz Highway.
