Speed was a possible factor in a head-on crash that killed a 25-year-old motorcyclist Monday morning in Naalehu, Hawaii island police said.

Police identified the victim as Eric Figueroa, of Kona.

Police said Figueroa was driving a 2001 Honda motorcycle southbound on Highway 11 when he lost control in a curve in the road, crossed the centerline, and slammed head on into an oncoming 2005 Jeep Wrangler, police said.

The driver of the Jeep, a 52-year-old woman, was not hurt. Figueroa was taken to Kona Community Hospital where he died Monday afternoon.

The crash happened at about 10 a.m. Monday and closed part of Highway 11 near the 70 mile marker for about 3 1/2 hours while police investigated.

It was the Big Island’s 16th traffic fatality this year compared to ten at this time in 2016.
