A fire destroyed an old structure at a cemetery in Pearl City.
Eighteen firefighters responded to the fire at Sunset Memorial Park shortly after 3:10 p.m. Monday. When they arrived, they observed a 500-square-foot shed engulfed in flames, said Honolulu Fire Spokesman Capt. David Jenkins.
Firefighters brought the fire under control by 3:25 p.m. and extinguished it by 4:06 p.m.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is undetermined. Damage to the shed, which was considered “a total loss,” was estimated at $90,000 to the structure and its contents.
Community members have long raised concerns about deteriorating conditions at the cemetery.
