West Maui brush fires deemed suspicious
The Maui Fire Department investigators are calling two brush fires that burned a total of five acres near the Kapalua Airport in Kahana suspicious, but the cause of the fires are undetermined, the Fire Department announced today.
West Maui firefighters got a report of smoke at 6:38 p.m. Monday in the hills above the Honokowai area. Multiple callers reported seeing the smoke visible from nearby resorts.
The first fire company arrived at 6:42 p.m. and found two separate brush fires half a mile south of the Kapalua Airport and a mile mauka of Honoapiilani Highway.
One fire burned four acres and the other one acre, said Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto.
The fires were about 100 yards apart and along a dirt road that leads to Mahinahina Water Treatment Facility above the airport.
Three engine companies, two water tankers and Air-1 worked to stop the fires from spreading upslope toward forested land and from crossing an access road on the south.
Firefighters contained the fires at about 8 p.m. and left the scene at 10:15 p.m. after it was determined to be extinguished.
Crews returned early Tuesday morning looking for hot spots that might have rekindled, but none were found. The fire was declared extinguished at 6 a.m.
No one was injured and no structures were threatened, the Fire Department said.
Witnesses to any suspicious activity before, during or after a fire is asked to call police at 911.
