One person died today in a head-on collision involving a sedan and dump truck in Paauilo, Hawaii island firefighters said.

Shortly after 9 a.m., the driver of a four-door sedan was heading southbound on Highway 19 near mile marker 36 when he crossed the center line and collided head on with an oncoming dump truck that was towing a flat bed trailer, the fire department said.

The sedan driver was thrown from the car upon impact and pinned beneath the flat bed trailer. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fire department said an SUV that was following the sedan also sustained minor damage in the crash, but two occupants inside the SUV were not hurt.

Paramedics treated the truck driver at the scene.

Police re-routed traffic to Hauola and Pohakea Roads as officers conducted an investigation.
