Waimanalo man dies in car accident on Pali Highway

A 29-year-old man from Waimanalo died in car accident Saturday night on the Pali Highway, police said.

The man was driving his SUV at high speed 3 miles southbound of the Pali tunnel near Nuuanu at about 11:00 p.m. when he collided into another vehicle. The driver of the other vehicle was a 63-year-old man from Honolulu. The passenger of the vehicle was a 63-year-old woman Honolulu. Both were not injured by the crash.

After colliding with the other vehicle, the Waimanalo man’s SUV continued into the grass shoulder and then collided into a guardrail. The SUV then came back onto the roadway where it flipped and came to rest.The Waimanalo man was ejected from the vehicle during the accident. He was taken to an area hospital in critical condition where he later died.

Police said high speed was a factor and it is unknown if alcohol was a factor in the accident — it is still under investigation.

There have been 20 traffic fatalities this year compared to 18 in 2016 around the same time, police said.
