Japanese Cultural Center to get Onizuka memorabilia

    The Onizuka Remembrance Collection, opened at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i on Saturday. Among the items on display is a model of the Challenger space shuttle alongside the spacesuit of Apollo 13 astronaut Fred W. Haise Jr.

    Former Gov. George Ariyoshi holds a family portrait of his family, which was recovered in the Atlantic Ocean two months after the Challenger space shuttle tragedy. The portrait was aboard with Onizuka as part of his personal belongings and survived intact.

History knows Hawaii’s first astronaut, Ellison Onizuka, as one of seven crew members killed in the space shuttle Challenger disaster, but those who personally knew him say he is best remembered for the way he lived. Read more
