3 survive plane crash under Moanalua Freeway

    First responders surveyed the remains of a small plane that crashed under a bridge Friday along the Moanalua Freeway in Mapunapuna. The single-engine Piper PA28 crashed shortly before 1:17 p.m.

    Shayne Enright, spokeswoman for city Emergency Medical Services, said the three men were taken in serious condition to a trauma center but suffered no major injuries.

    Jason Wessel, left, and Harley Bone helped rescue people from the crash. Bone pulled the victims from the wrecked plane, and Wessel helped to stabilize them.

The 27-year-old Kaimuki man ran as fast as he could into the stream and pulled — one by one — the three injured men out of the burning plane and onto the stream bank in about three minutes. Read more
