University of Hawaii football player Kalepo Naotala was seriously injured in an accident in waters off Waikiki Beach on Saturday afternoon.

Emergency Medical Services and Ocean Safety spokesperson Shayne Enright confirmed that a 19-year-old man was injured around 2:40 p.m. Saturday when he appeared to hit his head while diving off the wall near the Kapahulu Groin.

Enright said the man was transported to a hospital in serious condition.

Naotala is a freshman defensive tackle from Newport News, Va. He signed a letter of intent with the Rainbow Warriors on Feb. 3, 2016. He delayed enrolling at UH until the past January to fully recover from knee surgery. Naotala participated in UH’s spring training and the off-season conditioning program. He was projected to compete for playing time on the defensive line this coming season.
