Hilo man charged in connection with ambulance theft

A 24-year-old Hilo man has been charged in connection with an alleged ambulance theft at Hilo Medical Center.

Maksim Stasyuk was charged Friday with first-degree theft and two counts of criminal property damage. He is scheduled to make his initial court appearance today at South Hilo District Court.

Police said Stasyuk remains in custody in lieu of $36,000 bail.

Hospital staff reported the American Medical Response ambulance was taken from hospital grounds Thursday. Police said a witness reported “seeing the ambulance on Leilani Street, leading into the solid-waste transfer station.”

At 2:20 p.m. Friday, police located the ambulance and arrested Stasyuk.
