Jack Johnson, right, and Jake Shimabukuro perform at Kalihi Kai Elementary in 2015. Johnson returns to the Waikiki Shell Aug. 4 and Aug. 5 for a pair of concerts.

It’s no surprise Jack Johnson’s new album includes another love song for his wife, Kim, and other tunes that express the laid-back Hawaii musician’s deep concern for environmental issues.

But there’s also some political-minded content in “All The Light Above It Too,” recorded at Johnson’s Mango Tree Studio in Hawaii and set for release Sept. 8 through his Brushfire Records label.

One song fans are likely to hear at Johnson’s Waikiki Shell concerts Aug. 4 and 5 is “My Mind is for Sale.”

In a phone interview July 26 before playing at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, Calif., Star-Advertiser staff writer Mindy Pennybacker asked Johnson, 42, whether the song is about President Donald Trump.

“Some of it, but it’s also about how the time feels, with so many stories, gossip sometimes, ‘fake news,’” he said.

“It’s my opinion in the chorus: ‘I don’t care for your paranoid, us-against-them walls/ I don’t care for your careless, me-first, gimme-gimme appetite at all.’

“Trump has put out some of these ideas, a literal wall, but it’s also any kind of division — race, ethnicity — a lot of divisive talk. Pulling out of the Paris Agreement on climate change really depressed me, but I was really proud when (Hawaii) Gov. (David) Ige said that as a state, we’ll be following the Paris accords.”

The Aug. 5 concert at the Waikiki Shell is sold out, but lawn seating remains for the Aug. 4 performance at 4:30 p.m. with guests G. Love and Ron Artis II. Tickets are $39.50-$69.50 at ticketmaster.com or 800-745-3000. Visit Jackjohnsonmusic.com for more info.
