Cassey Palileo of the Hawaii Bonsai Association wraps branches of a Monterey cypress bonsai tree in wire to achieve an informal upright style during the 33rd annual Okinawan Festival at Kapiolani Park in 2015. Palileo said bonsai trees are manipulated to “give movement to show interesting curves.” He compared it to driving down a straight road versus a winding road.
